Authorities are currently conducting an extensive manhunt for two male suspects believed to have robbed two Korean tourists on Thursday night. Sadly, this incident resulted in the fatal shooting of one of the victims.
The close-knit and peaceful local community has been left in a state of shock and profound sorrow following the violent event. The tragic loss of a life in such a senseless manner has sparked a demand for justice among residents. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, law enforcement agencies are diligently working to swiftly apprehend the suspects. Ensuring the safety and security of both residents and visitors remains of paramount importance, and every possible measure is being taken to restore a sense of peace to Tumon.
According to the police reports, the shooting took place between 7:40 p.m. and 8 p.m. The tourists, a Korean couple visiting the island to celebrate their retirement, were leisurely strolling back from dinner at Tao Tao Tasi. As they made their way up the hill in front of Tsubaki Tower, a dark SUV suddenly approached them.
The passenger of the vehicle stepped out, brandishing a firearm and demanding their belongings. A struggle ensured, during which the suspect fired the weapon, resulting in a gunshot wound to the male victim. Despite the valiant efforts of emergency services, the victim tragically succumbed to his injuries at Guam Memorial Hospital.
News of the fatal shooting first broke Friday morning when a post with information about the incident started circulating on social media. The Office of the Governor quickly verified the message, with Governor Lou Leon Guerrero expressing her condolences to the victim's family and friends.
"Today is a very sad, tragic day for the life of a visitor from Korea and their family. But it also is a tragic day for our community ... and this is the most tragic experience in the beginning of our new year. It is something that should not have happened and so I would like the people of Guam to extend our deepest and sincerest condolences and sympathy to the family of this victim."
Presently, the Guam Police Department is actively investigating the incident and searching for two male individuals: the shooting suspect and a getaway driver. Although no other details have been provided apart from a description of the vehicle, the Guam Police Department is urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
The Guam Visitors Bureau has announced a reward of $50,000 for any information that leads to the arrest of the suspects, as confirmed by GPD. The bureau also assured that they are working closely with the Korean Consulate General to provide support for the victim's family during this difficult time.
Korean tourists make up a significant portion of Guam's annual visitors, with over 200,000 arrivals in 2022 alone. This tragic incident has sparked safety concerns among the Korean community and tourists planning to visit Guam.
In response to this incident, Governor Leon Guerrero stated that the government will not tolerate violence towards any resident or visitor on Guam and that they are taking immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of all those on the island. She also emphasized that Guam is a safe destination for visitors, and this isolated incident should not deter anyone from visiting.
